GAY, BLACK & IN THE HIP HOP COMMUNITY
Gay and Hip Hop! Two topics that are most talked about but when you add both in the same sentence, all hell breaks loose, especially with being a homosexual male in the Hip Hop community. Why is it not accepted? The real question is, why is it okay for women to be homosexual in the Hip Hop community but when it comes to men being gay, everyone shies away from that topic, forcing men to be on the “DL” which is even worse.
We get a double dose of two men in Hip Hop who land front and center of the camera on Love & Hip Hop Hollywood. They openly display their love life for the World to see. Nearly 3 million people watched as producers Milan Christopher and Miles Brock navigated new territory—on and off the screen—and went public for the first time with their relationship.
“I am worried that my sexual orientation will overshadow my talent. Being a gay hip hop rapper and people may have their opinions. I need more time to figure it out am I really ready to tell everybody right now… its hard,” Brock said in the VH1 special episode sneak peek video.
My question is, why is it so hard for people to accept gay men in the entertainment industry? Hold on, or is it just hard for people to accept gay black men in the industry, especially the ones who represent the Hip Hop culture.
“In hip hop industry it is crazy, you know being a black gay dude, its like a lot of people don’t mess with you,” Christopher added. I believe that it shouldn’t matter what sexual orientation a man is as long as he’s happy, accepts himself for who he is and is comfortable in his own skin.
It seems like a black male has to either choose to be one or the other. You can be black or you can be gay. You can’t be both. Society has made it easy to accept gay men or gay black men in fashion but just not Hip Hop and society has also said it is okay for women to be bisexual or lesbian. There are some unanswered questions that need to be answered.
