My name is Ashley Cobb I’m a blogger and freelance writer.  I operate a blog by the name of Dope Black Chick. was created to be platform where I can be the  voice that shares the stories of dope African American women and men with the world. On my site I have three main segments, one called Dope Black Girl Spotlight that features black women young or old who are doing exceptional things in their lives. Another series is entitled Dope Black Love Stories, here is where I feature some amazing couples who are madly in love. Lastly, I have Date a Dope Brother, where I introduce some extraordinary Black men to my females readers.

How did you first get into blogging?

I first got into blogging through Facebook, actually several of my Facebook friends suggested that I should start a blog, because they like reading my statuses. I was really reluctant at first due to FEAR, but after I prayed about it, I decided to take a leap of faith. I started my first blog on wordpress it was called the Diary of a Dope Black Chick, the feedback from it was so good that I kept writing and now we’re here.

How would you describe your blogging style?

My blogging style has definitely evolved, it used to be more satire, because I’m very sarcastic and funny in real life.  However on my site I do more storytelling, I tell other people’s stories. So I like to think I’m a versatile writer.

How do you manage time to run your blog efficiently?

Oh wow, there literally are NOT enough hours in the day!!! Honestly I’m still learning how to do this, for example today I just realized that I hadn’t emailed someone back who wanted to be featured on my site, they sent me an email two weeks ago –SMH! Yea I know, but it’s extremely hard, especially if you work a full time job like I do. Trying to succeed at work and then coming home to manage an ever growing blog is overwhelming at times. So if anyone knows how to help me better manage my time, hit up my email…..seriously!

Who has impacted you most in blogging and how?

Demetria Lucas aka The Belle of Brooklyn. I so want to be her when I grow up!

What was the most challenging moment in your blogging journey so far?

My most challenging moment was when I wrote a satire piece about President Obama last State of the Union speech that was removed from a blog group that I’m apart of due to the fact someone found it offensive. That hurt my feelings and made me doubt myself, however I quickly realized that there are always going to be critics and everyone is not going to like my style of writing and that is ok!

What do you find the most frustrating aspect of blogging?

The most frustrating thing about blogging is actually getting people to read your stuff. People will like it on FB, retweet it on Twitter but only a fraction of those folks actually take the time to read what you have to say.

How much time do you spend blogging?

Weekends are usually my blogging days, because I’m typically busy with work during the week. So Saturday and Sunday pretty much are my days to write post, schedule post, contact people stuff like that.

Is blogging your passion or your hobby?

Right now it’s both. I hope to one day soon turn blogging into a full time writing career.

What advice would you give to new bloggers?

BE PATIENT!! I have to remind myself of this daily. Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither will your brand. It takes consistent work and time!!

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 year?

Five years from now I see myself owning my own Editorial Storytelling Company, where big brand publications like Ebony, Essence, Glamour, Heart and Soul etc. hire me to write articles for them. That would be my dream job!!!
